Text AND COVER pdfs
A wee note to all. We're really now beyond re-writes. Please be aware that adding or deleting a sentence here and there can have a massive knock-on effect on the entire book.
THE MAIN PRINT EDITION
This is the book you'll be selling (in bookshops if you're lucky) or handing out as gifts. It's printed commercially by a firm called 4edge that I've been working with for almost a decade now, and it's a quality paperback, "US Trade" size 5"x8" (127mmx203.2mm) with an ISBN 9781912365494. Six copies will be sent to the Legal Deposit Libraries (the old Copyright Libraries), including the British Library and the National Library of Scotland in George IV Bridge.
THE AMAZON KDP PRINT EDITION
This is the book that sells online as print-on-demand. Its ISBN is 9781912365500. Essentially this is an identical book to the main edition above apart from that ISBN (which also has to appear on the rear cover) and a few little things in the copyright page on the reverse of the title page. It's all in tiny print so you might never look at it at all.
The Amazon book quality isn't quite up to 4edge standard, but it's not bad. I think they use cheaper paper, so although it's supposed to be the same – 80gsm white bookwove – the Amazon edition will be a little thinner. You probably won't sell many this way but there's zero outlay and it's the cheapest way to sell books abroad.
THE EBOOK
Creating ebooks isn't easy, and there's a lot of trial and error in their construction. If you're unfamiliar with what happens, there are essentially two different file formats: those that end 'mobi', which you are intended for Amazon Kindles; and those that end 'epub', which are intended for everything else, including iPads and e-readers such as Kobos that are more popular in other countries.
They both need testing. To test the Kindle file, connect your Kindle to a computer by its charging cable and you'll find the Kindle appears as a USB hard drive on your desktop. Then drag the mobi file into the Kindle's Documents folder. Disconnect, and when you next open up the Kindle, you should find it in your Kindle Library. (NOTE: Amazon are trying to be difficult, and you might need to switch your Kindle off compeltely and switch it on again.) You can also test the mobi file on a computer using the free app Calibre. Theoretically, the epub file should be easier on an iPad and so on: just click on the file on the right. Alternatively, download it and read it at your convenience on an app like Apple Books. provisional publication date friday 7th November 2025
