My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I'm not surprised that Where The Bodies Are Buried has divided readers, as it's anything but pure Brookmyre. In fact, the clue might be on the front: he's now just "Chris" having dropped the "topher". This ISN'T a laugh-a-minute load of nonsense in which one outrageous event follows another, this is a much more credible gangster-style tale set in Glasgow.
As such, it might best be described as a "debut novel", as I'm not sure Brookmyre has quite yet mastered the style - indeed it would hardly be reasonable to have expected him to. There are also quite a few comments elsewhere about the ending, and I share some of the reservations, too. I won't spoil it.
It's decent - maybe 3.5, but rounded up to 4 because, when all's said and done, it's still a great read.
