Gordon Lawrie spent 36 years as an Edinburgh secondary school teacher before being released on promise of good behaviour. Harbouring a long-held ambition to write a novel, he finally unleashed his debut novel Four Old Geezers And A Valkyrie on the unsuspecting public first as an ebook in 2012, then in print in 2013. Set in contemporary Edinburgh, it tells the story of a group of washed-up retiral-age men who form a small rock band and have a couple of surprise YouTube hits. It's been described variously as "a joy", "hilarious" and "wonderful".
Impatient to find a publisher before he died, Gordon Lawrie took matters into his own hands by forming a self-publishing collective called Comely Bank Publishing, which has just published the work of a second author and will now consider the work of others.
Gordon will talk about his novel, reading an extract or two, about writing in general, and about the opportunities and pitfalls of self-publishing. The novel comes with its own original music, and if the audience is good he will play a couple of the songs. If it's not good, he'll play more.
